Curiosity
The vast majority of literature available on serial killers in India is fiction. Most of what we have conceived as a civilization of these individuals came from the wrong places. Therefore, I decided to study these individuals, their lives in-depth.
Before I even begin I would like to share with you why I decided to study them. As a youngster I was driven to crime fiction like many of you. Movies, novels, short stories, and whatnot. I was a regular visitor of many colorful websites on macabre and murderers. Like what happens to a person who does something persistently my taste for literature on fictions on these murderers matured into nonfictions. I wanted to know more about reality. And the reality I observed through the contents created by authors from all around the world amused me. I realized sometimes realities can be stranger than fiction.
The curiosity these readings created made me choose an unheard subject for my higher studies. After pursuing graduation in Psychology in 2006, I decided to do my post-graduation in Criminology. When my readings of multiple murderers reached a saturation point, I realized there are no authentic literature on serial killers in India. My mind fumed with a lot of questions.
Are Indian Serial Killers are just like serial killers in the US and UK? By this time I had outgrown movies and series of murderers. I wanted authentic answers. I live in the world's second most populated country in the world and what are the chances that few of them are not serial killers? They were pretty slim.
Occasional items of news reported on popular websites and medias used to grab my attention. These are news of serial killers getting arrested by the police. some articles will appear in the following days narrating few details of murders, methods of killers, and assumptions of probable motives. Though, most of them sink well with the plenty of movies and fictional literature available.
There were references in certain literature about Raman Raghav. Raman Raghav was a serial killer who was active during the 1960s. Retired Police Officer Kulkarni wrote about his encounters with this killer in his book. Kushwanth Singh's posthumously released book had a chapter in it on Raman Raghav. I found this literature very interesting.
By this time I had completed my Post Graduation and decided to do a Ph.D. in Criminal Psychology. After contemplating much about my research I proposed to conduct a scientific investigation into the lives of Serial Killers in India.
What were they even before they begin to kill? What could have motivated them? If serial Killings are a lot different from what any normal person would do in their every day lives, how different their lives were? Are they born different or they are themselves a victim of their circumstances? These are the questions that dominated my mind.
The article is written by S. A. Deepak, Ph.D. He is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at D.G. Vaishnav College. You can read his books on serial Killers in India in the below link.
